It All Starts with a Great Plan

First things first: Get your plan up and running. Here are the key points to consider:
  • Who is your audience?
  • What challenges do they face?
  • How can you help them?

Audience
No matter what business you’re in, you have a specific audience of customers and fans. Figure out who they are and what characteristics they have.

  • Are you a wedding planner? Your target audience is engaged couples.
  • Do you sell children’s shoes? You want to appeal to parents.

Personalize your messages by dividing your audience into sub-groups. This way you can send targeted emails that offer really relevant info.

  • Group your clients by the month of their weddings.
  • Group parents according to the age of their children.

Challenges
Identify the unique challenges your audience faces.

  • June brides want to learn about the best outdoor event venues in the area.
  • Parents of toddlers want to buy good quality soft sole shoes.

How You Can Help
You’ve pinpointed your audience, and you know what issues are on their mind. Now think about the different ways your business can help them.

  • Send the June brides a newsletter with reviews of your favorite local venues.
  • Offer parents exclusive coupons on the latest styles for new walkers.

Organize Your Mailing List

A mailing list is a super-important feature of any good email marketer’s strategy. It’s made up of subscribers, people who personally opt-in (that’s fancy lingo for signing up). Follow these 3 simple steps to get your list off the ground.

Build It
Make it easy for people to subscribe to your emails by adding sign-up forms to your website, blog and email campaigns.

Remember, when it comes to your list, always go organic. It should consist of people who opted-in and want to receive emails from you. Forming actual relationships with subscribers who have interacted with you in the past will boost your open, view and click rates.
Segment It
Splitting your subscribers into sub-groups is an amazing (and convenient!) way to send exclusive, tailored content. For example: Segment customers into birthday lists so that you can send each one exclusive coupons during their special month. This engaging, personal touch will show that you care - and will grab their attention with your creative approach.

Manage It
We know that you invest a lot in your list, so we want to help you take good care of it.

  • Keep your mailing list clean. Remove email addresses that bounce - meaning your email was not delivered to that recipient - and don’t re-add unsubscribers.
  • Beware of falling into the black hole of the spam folder. Only contact people who subscribe to your emails, and don’t buy mass lists of recipients who didn’t subscribe.

Create Killer Content

Show your customers that you mean business by sending them relevant, interesting and helpful content. Learn how to get your creative juices flowing with these tips.

Make Them Care About You
Give subscribers a sneak peek at the cool things you’re doing with newsletters, event invites, sale promotions, new product announcements and more. Want to tell them about your holiday sale? Give them an exclusive discount. Want to invite fans to your event? Offer a giveaway to the first people who RSVP.

Say It, Write It
Your content should sound like you, so write as you speak - you can always tighten up the text later. Imagine that you’re having an informal conversation with your audience. Be sure to include engaging call-to-action (CTA) buttons that motivate them to click, like “Find Out More” or “Dive Right In”.

Keep It Short & Sweet
Everyone - including your subscribers - tends to scan emails, so get your message out in as few words as possible. Have a lot to say? Include links! And be sure to use brief, fun titles that’ll draw attention.

Fast Track to Success

Once your campaign goes out, take a minute to break out your victory dance - and then start analyzing your results. A huge part of email marketing is measuring your success. This helps you focus on areas you need to improve - be it subject lines, content, CTAs, or anything else.

Ready to crunch some numbers? Here are the key metrics you should track:

Emails Sent
This is your starting point - the total number of recipients you sent your email campaign to.

Emails Delivered
Next is the number of emails that were actually delivered. If it’s lower than the 'Emails Sent' figure, that’s probably because some email addresses bounced - a good indicator that you should clean your list and remove outdated ones.

Email Opens & Click Rates
Go deeper into your email’s engagement stats by seeing how many subscribers opened your email and clicked on it.

Total Views
Learn how many people viewed your campaign via email and the web, and gain a better understanding of your campaign’s quality. The more engaging the content and design, the more it’ll grab your audience’s attention.

Total Clicks
Check out how many people clicked on your email. If this number is low, then think of new ways to spice up your CTAs. Make the text friendlier (“Read Me!”, “Find Out How”) and move the button towards the top of the campaign. Remember, you can include a few CTAs throughout to give readers more chances to click.
